From July 8-10, 2024, the Siracusa International Institute hosted the first activity of the European Judicial Training Network’s Working Group on Digitalisation.

Organised by the EJTN in collaboration with UNESCO, École Nationale de la Magistrature and the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights, the 3-day seminar focused on “Artificial Intelligence and the Rule of Law”.

The seminar raised pivotal questions such as: “What is Artificial Intelligence? How does it work? And more importantly, how does it integrate into the judicial context?” Although technologies like AI have been around for decades, their application in justice and law enforcement settings is a relatively recent development.

The event brought together European judges, prosecutors, and court staff to to support and equip them with the necessary digital skills to face the new challenges posed by the digital revolution. During the seminar, participants engaged in dynamic discussions on a variety of pressing topics, such as the impact of AI on fundamental rights, the latest AI regulatory frameworks, potential risks associated with AI, and the ethical implementation of AI in the judicial sector.

This training programme was based on the UNESCO’s Global Toolkit on AI and the Rule of Law for the Judiciary, ensuring a thorough exploration of the subject matter. The Toolkit includes activities, content, and resources pertinent to AI, Human Rights, and the Rule of Law for justice sector stakeholders.

The success of this seminar underscores the ongoing dedication to advancing judicial processes in the digital era, highlighting the continuous effort to integrate modern technologies into the legal landscape while upholding ethical standards and fundamental rights.
