On October 16th, Mr. Filippo Musca, Acting Director General of The Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights attended an international seminar within the project “Transfer Radicalisation Approaches in Training” (TRAin TRAINING) in Rome.
The TRAin TRAINING project – which is funded by the European Commission – is aimed at enhancing knowledge on the phenomenon of radicalization in prison and probation (PP). It will target more than 2800 practitioners (PP, judges, police officers, healthcare staff, teachers, chaplains, etc.) and more than 800 policy-makers/stakeholders, by using the risk assessment protocol that will be developed within the ongoing the parallel project “Raising Awareness and Staff Mobility on violent RADicalisation in Prison and Probation services” (RASMORAD).
Introductory remarks were given this morning by Counsellor Riccardo Turrini Vita, Director General for Training of the Department of the Italian Penitentiary Administration and TRAin Training project leader. Welcome speeches were delivered by Hon. Francesco Basentini, Head of the Italian Penitentiary Administration and by Hon. Gemma Tuccillo, Head of the Italian Juvenile and Community Sanctions Administration.
The seminar was structured in three sections: the first – chaired by the Hon. Turrini Vita – dealt with the threat of radicalization and it was focused in particular on the jihadist threat in Europe and on the challenges posed by violent extremism; the second – chaired by Ms. Carla Ciavarella (Director of General Affairs and International Relations at the Department of the Italian Penitentiary Administration – Directorate General for Training) – concerned a comparative analysis of methodologies to prevent and counter radicalism in prison and probation services.
In this section a presentation was made by Ms. Delphine Verheyde, External Consultant of The Siracusa International Institute and former Project Consultant of the Rasmorad Project.
The third session – chaired by Ms. Cira Stefanelli, (Director of Training for juveniles and probation staff at the Department of the Italian Penitentiary Administration – Directorate General for Training) – focused on the improvement of knowledge and skills for prison and probation staff.
