In the framework of the project “The Independence of the Judiciary in Lebanon: a Social Priority”, conducted by The Legal Agenda – a Lebanese Non-Governmental Organization working on law and public policy in Lebanon and the Arab region – the Siracusa Institute coordinates a study visit on the Italian Judicial System for the Lebanese delegation. The delegation is composed by Mr. Nizar Saghieh, Co-founder and executive Director of The Legal Agenda and Senior Legal Researcher within the EU project “Support to reinforce the independence of the judiciary”; Ms. Mireille Najm-Checrallah, Lawyer and member of the national committee established to draft law texts on the organization of civil judiciary; and Prof. Maan Bou Saber, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences at Notre Dame University in Beirut and member of the same national committee.
Ms. Stefania Lentinello, Program Officer of the Siracusa Institute, is the coordinator of the study visit. This morning Ms. Lentinello participated to the meeting with the representatives of LAW – Legal Aid Worldwide – on the work of the Italian attorneys, the relationships with the judiciary and the good practices of the Italian legal defense. The Meeting was also attended by Ms. Laura Guercio, President of Legal Aid Worlwide.
Between April 2 and 6, the delegation will also visit the Italian Ministry of Justice, The High Council for the Judiciary (CSM) and the National Association of Magistrates. The overall purpose of the projects is to promote and guarantee the independence of judiciary in Lebanon as a key social priority.
