The Siracusa International Institute’s 4th Specialisation Course for Junior Prosecutors (SCJP) on International Criminal Justice and International Cooperation in Criminal Matters opened today in the presence of more than 35 participants from 23 countries across the world, from Taiwan to Russia, from Chile to the United Kingdom, and from The Netherlands to Kenya.
The course is co-organised with the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP), and it is also supported by the International Association of Penal Law (AIDP).
The SCJP is designed to highlight the most important synergies between international criminal law and the domestic prosecution of international crimes, including transnational crimes. Over the two weeks of the course the SCJP prepares domestic prosecutors to work on cases involving core international crimes and transnational crimes, while also giving specialised training on international legal cooperation in criminal matters. The course employs a wide variety of interactive, practice-oriented, and experiential methods.
The opening ceremony of the course was held this morning, when participants were welcomed by Judge Jean-François Thony, Prosecutor General of the Court of Appeal of Rennes and President of the Siracusa International Institute; Mr. Gerard Jarosch, President of the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP), Ms. Elizabeth Howe, President of the International Legal Assistance Consortium and Ms Edith Van den Broeck, Senior Public Prosecutor in Belgium and Senior Legal Advisor of the IAP.
