The Siracusa International Institute’s First Initiative in Guinea to Combat Atrocity Crimes

11/12/2024

Yesterday, on Human Rights Day, we were honoured to launch the inaugural session of The Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights (SII) REACT program (Regional Atrocity Crimes Training Platform) for Guinean prosecutors and investigators in Conakry, Guinea.

Marking a significant milestone, this is the first initiative launched in Guinea by the Siracusa International Institute, designed for Guinean prosecutors and investigators. It aims to enhance professional skills and equip national practitioners with the tools to deliver victim-centred accountability that is trauma-informed, intersectional and gender-sensitive.

Hosted at Centre de Formation Judiciaire in Conakry, the event featured online opening remarks from the SII President Jean-François Thony, the French Ambassador Luc Briard, the Guinean Minister of Justice Yaya Kaïraba KABA Kaba and the SII Deputy Director General Céline Viguier. Participants represented a diverse array of national agencies, underscoring our collective commitment to justice and human rights.

Our expert panel included Olivier Beauvallet and Dr. Ousman Njikam (Vice President and Vice Registrar of the Special Criminal Court in Bangui), and Algassimou Diallo (Prosecutor of the Republic at the Court of First Instance of Dixinn, Prosecutor during the September 28, 2009, trial in Conakry). Discussions covered an introduction to international criminal law, distinctions between various crimes, and in-depth analyses of the Special Criminal Court’s operations in Bangui and the 2009 Conakry trial.

The Siracusa International Institute is constantly working on the improvement of the skills of legal professionals in the fight against impunity for atrocity crimes.
